Disappointing emulation in Nintendo 64 games on Switch Online Expansion Pack
The new Expansion Pack premium subscription adds Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games to Switch Online – at a not insignificantly higher price.
Unsurprisingly, not everyone is thrilled with Nintendo's approach to emulation. For example, there's no way to change default button mappings, leaving you at the mercy of Nintendo's not always optimal decisions. There are also reports of lag and unstable online play.
- Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 available at launch
- More classic Nintendo 64 games like Banjo-Kazooie are on the horizon
- Expansion Pack costs $49.99 / €39.99 / £34.99 a year
Suboptimal: Players have reported input and audio lag, as well as graphical artifacts. The most notable example is the fog in one area of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Forgetful: The Nintendo 64 emulator doesn't support the Nintendo 64 Controller Pak, a memory card peripheral for the original console, so some games are unable to store data across sessions. Not entirely ready for prime time, and arguably not worth twice the subscription price.
