Disappointing emulation in Nintendo 64 games on Switch Online Expansion Pack

Switch Online + Expansion Pack banner

The new Expansion Pack premium subscription adds Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games to Switch Online – at a not insignificantly higher price.

Unsurprisingly, not everyone is thrilled with Nintendo's approach to emulation. For example, there's no way to change default button mappings, leaving you at the mercy of Nintendo's not always optimal decisions. There are also reports of lag and unstable online play.

  • Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 available at launch
  • More classic Nintendo 64 games like Banjo-Kazooie are on the horizon
  • Expansion Pack costs $49.99 / €39.99 / £34.99 a year

Suboptimal: Players have reported input and audio lag, as well as graphical artifacts. The most notable example is the fog in one area of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Forgetful: The Nintendo 64 emulator doesn't support the Nintendo 64 Controller Pak, a memory card peripheral for the original console, so some games are unable to store data across sessions. Not entirely ready for prime time, and arguably not worth twice the subscription price.

Saber Interactive and Illogika have announced that they are adapting the A Quiet Place movie series into a single-player story-driven adventure scheduled for release next year.

The game will feature an “original story and gameplay that captures the compelling suspense, emotion, and drama for which the series is famous.”, and is in development at Illogika in Montreal.

Hope & horror: “We’re excited to work with EP1T0ME and to team up with Saber Interactive to share this unique vision of hope and horror with players everywhere in the future,” said iLLOGIKA’s Herve Sliwa.

Shhhhhhh: A Quiet Place is set in a post-apocalyptic future where blind monsters with extremely sensitive hearing hunt the last remnants of humanity, and the first movie starred Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.

The Steam Halloween Sale is coming up and will last from October 28th until November 1st according to documents posted on Steamworks.

The Steam Autumn Sale follows between November 24th and November 30th, while the Steam Winter Sale starts on December 22nd and will last until January 5th next year.

Stress free: The major seasonal sales used to feature time-limited promotions that were updated every 12 to 24 hours, but Valve probably discovered that their customers didn't enjoy the pressure, and now simply feature persistent discounts for the entire duration of the sale.

What is the first SCP you face in SCP – Containment Breach?

SCP-173 after dealing with fellow D-class personnel. Don't blink.

ANSWER: SCP-173!

What's a Halloween season without a spot of SCP Foundation terror? The SCP Foundation is an archive of spooky tales, artifacts, and creatures that have inspired many a game, including the classic Containment Breach which features a wide range of terrible creatures – including the classic SCP-173.

Sure, it looks like a silly statue with stumpy limbs, but it's actually a terrifying killing machine and the only way to keep it at bay is to keep your gaze trained on it. Imagine the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who but it's a horror that wrings your neck when you're not looking. Give Containment Breach a shot and try not to blink.
