Elden Ring development in final stages, is on track

Elden Ring in final stages of development

Standard Souls esk monster, lots of arms and a massive warhammer!

FromSoftware's eagerly anticipated Elden Ring, the open-world spiritual successor to the Dark Souls trilogy, is on track to launch on January 21st next year.

Elden Ring brings together the considerable talents of Dark Souls and Armored Core creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, and Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. Martin has contributed to the world-building and story, while Miyazaki is expected to deliver his trademark tough-as-nails brand of masochistic role-playing action.

Final stage: Elden Ring dramatically increases the scope of FromSoftware's ambitions and includes all-new systems such as mounted combat. “We’re in the final stages of development, and we’re moving forward quietly,” said producer Yasuhiro Kitao.

New stuff: “We will continue to develop the game to meet your expectations, so please look forward to it,” he told Famitsu. He also teased that Elden Ring features some unannounced surprises.

Capcom shifts focus to PC

Animation of Monster Hunter Rise battles

Capcom intends to make PC its primary platform according to COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto, which should mean the end of half-baked PC ports.

He told Nikkei that Capcom will “mainly focus on PC software” because it is “driving global sales.” A good first example of the shift is the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise, recently showcased at the Tokyo Game Show.

  • Monster Hunter World’s second-largest audience is on PC
  • Resident Evil Village on Steam set a sales record for the series
  • Monster Hunter Rise launches on Steam on January 13th next year
  • You can check out the Monster Hunter Rise PC demo on October 13th

PC resurgent: “The pandemic is changing the way people look at PCs,” Tsujimoto continued. “I think PCs will be the next big thing after smartphones.” as more players discover that small screens and ‘odd touch controls’ hold them back.

Multiplatform: No need to worry about Capcom abandoning consoles, however: “We will expand our business for dedicated game consoles, which has been the mainstream up to now, but PC will be the mainstream in the future.”

Metroid Prime 3 was pitched as a more ambitious open-world, non-linear game

Metroid’s Samus Aran giving a thumbs up

Metroid Prime 3 for Wii was originally pitched as an open-world, non-linear game. But wait, isn't the Metroidvania formula already a sort of open-world, non-linear design? It seems Retro wanted to scale that up massively.

Director Mark Pacini had ambitious plans for the final chapter in the trilogy, but “we weren’t able to prototype a lot of those, because those were really big,” said former Retro developer Bryan Walker. A lot of the plans revolved around Samus's ship, suggesting that the game could have spanned multiple planets or allowed Samus to explore locations from the air.

Open pitch: Pacini had made an “origami Samus ship,” that he used as a sort of “mascot in some of his presentations.” Walker thinks Retro Studios “may have fallen short” by failing to expand on the Metroid Prime formula.

Experiment: Walker would have loved to see fans respond to the ship's ideas and a more unfettered Metroid experience. Let's hope his memory has been stirred by stories from his former colleagues at Retro, who's now working on Metroid Prime 4.

Who is missing from this horror game trio? Mary, Gary, ____?

A spooky scene of Ib alongside a morphed portrait.

If you knew the answer, congratulations: You have obscure taste in games! Ib is a horror game from 2012 that tells the story of a girl visiting an art exhibit with her parents, and becoming trapped in the gallery as the line between fiction and reality begins to blur.

There are two other people trapped in there with her, though: Gary and Mary. It's an atmospheric game with some fun scares, and it also helped kickstart the trend of making horror games in RPG Maker. Ib's creator has announced an upcoming remake, so now's a great time to check out the original freeware game and get yourself some Halloween scares.
