Today: CD Projekt is going back to basics with their store — Bethesda launches video series lifting the curtain on Starfield — Valve and Oculus will be getting competition from Apple next year

Fans take Mother into their own hands

Ambitious EarthBound fans have gotten sick of waiting for Nintendo to announce a new chapter in the series, and have taken it upon themselves to make their own sequel, boldly named Mother 4.

Like in the earlier games, the story follows “a group of teenagers and their road trip across a rose-tinted America.”, and you can catch a first glimpse of the game in the reveal trailer.

  • Mother 4 is a fan project run entirely by independent developers
  • No connection with Nintendo or HAL Laboratory
  • Shigesato Itoi has said he has no plans for a sequel
  • Mother is known as EarthBound outside Japan

Mother FAQ: The official website features a FAQ answering most questions you might have, as well as showing off pictures from the game and listing a rough timeline for the development.

Roadtrip: The heroes of Mother 4 are small town teenagers Aaron, Maggie, Troy, Trisme and “many other loyal allies” dealing with the aftermath of a “fateful meeting” deep in the woods.

GOG is going back to its DRM-free roots logo is CD Projekt's online games store, which originally specialized in bringing old games to new audiences. It eventually grew into a more typical storefront offering both new and old games, but CD Projekt is taking it back to its roots following disappointing financial results.

The business posted a year-to-date loss of $2.21 million in the third quarter of 2021, a significant drop from the $1.37 million profits in the same period in 2020. CFO Piotr Nielubowicz announced that there will be changes, specifically a return to the original concept: Curated DRM-free games.

Downsizing: Some of the GOG developers will be transferred to other parts of the company, and the store will no longer be part of the Gwent consortium to avoid affecting its financial results. GOG was recently the subject of some controversy after it started selling Hitman – Game of the Year Edition, which features online DRM.

Which game character do you assassinate in Grand Theft Auto 3?

ANSWER: Tanner!

Before Grand Theft Auto 3 changed open-world games forever, the closest you would get to driving around in a living, breathing city was Driver 2. It's a pretty clear inspiration for Grand Theft Auto 3, and it's not exactly a surprise that Rockstar paid homage to the series. What's a little more surprising is how they decided to go about it.

The Yakuza asks you to kill an undercover cop posing as a driver, described as “strangely animated” and “useless out of his car”. Harsh, but possibly fair considering Grand Theft Auto is now the biggest name in games while the Driver series stalled after Driver San Francisco. Tanner just didn't have the chops.
