Unwanted Father Winter in Battlfield 2042

Battefield 2042’s Father Winter cosmetic skin

Looks like DICE can do nothing right with Battlefield 2042: Now the community is up in arms over the Father Winter skin, bemoaning the Fortnite-like tone of the game.

Players apparently expected a sombre meditation on the nature of war, but got quippy one-liners that trivialize warfare instead. They clearly missed the part in the trailer where a pilot ejects from a fighter jet during a dogfight and shoots down his quarry with a shoulder-mounted missile launcher while in free fall.

  • Battlefield 2042 is rumoured to have made 4.23M in its first week
  • The playerbase has dropped by 70% since launch
  • Farming Simulator 22 has more active users on Steam
  • EA creating Battlefield Universe, Vince Zampella at the helm

Big bugs: No matter the tone of Battlefield 2042, DICE is still working to fix basic design problems like the aiming system, which makes particularly sniper rifles pretty much worthless.

Disconnect: The latest set of cosmetic items demonstrate the vast gulf between the expectations of the players and the product DICE is making for them. Hopefully, the two can eventually meet in the middle.

Nukklear and Funcom making Dune game

Funcom is teaming up with German studio Nukklear to make a survival game based on Dune, building on the success of Conan Exiles.

“We’ve supported and collaborated on many projects over the years, but taking on Dune is by far the biggest yet,” said CEO Kirk Lenke of Nukklear.

Investment: Funcom secured the rights for Dune in 2019, with the aim of making a multiplayer survival game. Additional investment from Tencent then “greatly expanded its scope”.

Partnership: “As the Dune open-world survival game is the most ambitious project we’ve ever undertaken at Funcom, having skilled and reliable partners is an absolute must,” said Funcom CEO Rui Casais.

Capcom produced intentional leaks to market Resident Evil 3

Who leaks to the leakers? According to a, uh, leaked document from Capcom, the publisher created hype around the Resident Evil 3 remake in order to generate speculation and hype in the fan community.

A slide titled Roadmap Feedback states that the marketing team circulated fake leaks in order to “antagonize core fan base right from the start”, and the strategy involved Capcom marketing teams playing “catch up afterwards.”

Sneaky leaks: It's certainly an interesting way to engage the community and test marketing messages without committing fully to them, and then letting the core marketing strategy take advantage of the approaches that gained traction.

Marketable: How common is this strategy in the rest of the industry? Probably a lot more common than gamers would like. In any case, Resident Evil 3 was well-received by press and fans, although it failed to reach the lofty heights enjoyed by its predecessor, the Resident Evil 2 remake.

We reached out to Capcom for comment, but it refused to offer any comment on the information obtained within the leaked document.

Who acts as your Vice President in Saints Row IV?

Keith David as himself, shooting aliens down

ANSWER: The High Priestess!

The Saints Row reboot seems to tone down the balls-out insanity of the series, which is maybe not entirely surprising considering how spectacularly over-the-top the games got. In Saints Row 4, you play the US President defending the nation from an alien invasion alongside your vice president, the actor Keith David.

Keith David also portrays Third Street Saints founder Julius, and you can arrange a sort of meta twin paradox situation by making the two characters meet – prompting a quip that they sound nothing like each other. Let no-one accuse the Saints Row series of taking itself too seriously. As if.
