Unreal Engine 5 Shows PS5 Gameplay

Epic shows off first Unreal Engine 5 tech demo on PlayStation 5 hardware

The latest and greatest from this Summer of Gaming Event is a real-time PlayStation 5 tech demo.

The playable tech demo is powered by Epic's new Unreal Engine 5, and both the developers and Epic declared that the demo would be impossible without the “massive, massive increase in graphics performance” offered by PlayStation 5.

Epic’s statement: “This is not just a whole lot of polygons and memory. It’s also a lot of polygons being loaded every frame as you walk around through the environment and this sort of detail you don’t see in the world would absolutely not be possible at any scale without these breakthroughs that Sony’s made,” said Tim Sweeney.

Going next-gen: Epic is also working to launch Fortnite for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. While we still haven't seen any other PlayStation 5 gameplay, the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo is the best indication of what to expect from Sony's new console.

People quickly figured out that the sequence 8788788778 could be put into Google Maps and would show you a pizzeria. Unfortunately – but perhaps predictably – people started harassing the pizzeria, forcing Five Nights at Freddy's creator Scott Cawthon to announce that the pizza place had nothing to do with the games.

The pizzeria owner, on the other hand, decided to make the best of the weird situation, and offered a Fazbears Pizzeria Special for a limited time.

PlayStation Operating Reports

Sony lowers revenue expectations

PlayStation hardware revenue has plunged both because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the imminent arrival of a brand-new console.

The Game and Network Services division of Sony reported ¥1.98 trillion in revenue for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020, a 14 percent decrease year-on-year. The games division made an operating profit of ¥238 billion, which is down from ¥311 billion last year. Sony blamed a dearth of first-party hits.

PlayStation 5: “...although factors such as employees working from home and restrictions on international travel have presented some challenges in regards to part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines, development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season," Sony said in a statement.

Income warning: The setbacks and expectations of lower revenues and profits in coming quarters are not affecting Sony's next-generation console plans. They expect their results for the end of fiscal year 2020 on March 31st 2021 “to be at least 30% lower” than last year.

Quiz Answer - Did You Get It Right?

Which Panzer Dragoon game included a port of the original Saturn game?

Answer: Panzer Dragoon Orta!

While not quite as expensive as Panzer Dragoon Saga, the original Panzer Dragoon often fetches $100 on eBay.

Add a Saturn console plus adapters to get the old hunk to display decent pictures on your TV, and you're definitely a few hundred dollars poorer. But there is a better solution: Panzer Dragoon Orta for Xbox!

The 2002 classic is backwards compatible with Xbox One and it's even for sale on the Xbox Games Store for a tenner. Then you just need to beat Panzer Dragoon Orta on any difficulty and you'll unlock the original. Both games are well worth your time, so maybe it's time to saddle up for some dragon riding fun?
