Game Boy games coming to Switch?

Rumours claim Nintendo is planning to expand the Switch Online retro game catalogue with Game Boy and Game Boy Color games in September.

Switch Online is nearing its third anniversary, and it's not exactly impossible that Nintendo is planning to mark the occasion with something new. The rumours are not new either: The first evidence of Game Boy coming to Switch Online was uncovered by dataminers in 2019.

  • Game Boy launched in April 1989
  • Game Boy Color was introduced in 1998
  • The Switch NES app can also emulate Game Boy

All-in-one: There are unused emulators inside the NES app, leading to speculation that more retro platforms could make a comeback on Switch. Virtual Console for Wii, 3DS and Wii U featured games from Sega and Neo Geo consoles, as well as arcade classics.

No advance: It doesn't seem like Game Boy Advance games will be appearing any time soon, though several developers are working on re-releases of games from the classic handheld, including Nintendo itself.

CD Projekt RED hires mod tool makers

Photo of CD Projekt RED’s office

CD Projekt RED is planning to offer modding tools for Cyberpunk 2077 and is hiring people with experience building mod toolkits for its games. The creators of the Wolvenkit mod tools for The Witcher 3 have already joined the studio, and they will probably not be the last.

"We are extremely pleased to announce that @Blumster, @Nightmarea, @rfuzzo and I will be joining CDPR under my and @Nightmarea's company”, said Hambalkó ‘Traderain’ Bence.

Cybermods: “The modding community has always been very important to us and we are happy to be working with them side by side on further expanding the tools which are available to modders," said CD Projekt.

Expertise: CD Projekt RED supports Cyberpunk 2077 mods, but there is still no official modding for the game. The recent hiring means that problem is about to be solved, ensuring that Cyberpunk 2077 will most likely enjoy a very long shelf-life.

Motive reveals early footage of Dead Space Remake

Medical Deck concept art, showing broken medical machines, blood splattered walls and lots of fog - Isaac is seen searching the location with a flash light

EA Motive hosted a Dead Space developer stream last night, which gave us a “very early look” at the rebooted horror series, showing combat, story, and the new mechanics.

Live viewers were given a fresh look at the iconic dismemberment system, which introduced a new ‘peeling’ damage feature, where players can dynamically remove the flesh from enemies’ bodies.

What we learned:

  • Production started just over a year ago, so it's still very early days, but the team showed off some early progress from the current build that's being made from the ground up using the Frostbite engine
  • Gunner Wright will return to voice Isaac, although Motive says that it's laid out some rules for the dialogue as it recognizes that isolation and silence are key to the game's atmosphere
  • The foundation of the Dead Space story will remain the same, but Motive wants to make the narrative richer by giving it more of a connection to the wider Dead Space universe and worldbuilding
  • Motive also showcased the new zero-g mechanic, which has been overhauled and will open up new paths and environments to explore along with 360-degree freedom, and the thrusters that we originally saw in Dead Space 2

Which Game Boy Advance game was advertised by a beatboxing Mario?

Psychonauts's hero, Raz, surprised at the game's initial sales.

ANSWER: Mario Pinball Land!

Mario dressed as a rapper has been a fixture of the meme landscape since the 2000s, but where did the idea come from? The first appearance seems to have been in a Japanese commercial for Super Mario Ball, also known as Mario Pinball Land, doing a beatboxing number before being crushed into a ball.

We can all agree that’s pretty fertile soil for meme magic, but it couldn’t save Mario Pinball Land from mediocrity. Sure, it looks pretty great for a Game Boy Advance game, but the venn diagram overlap between Mario and pinball fans just wasn’t big enough to make it a success. Still, rapping Mario lives on in our memes.
