Dark Horse Comics Opens Video Game Division

Dark Horse Games will be led by Johnny B. Lee

The big news this morning is that Dark Horse Comics is getting into the Video Game space, with the company opening a division known as Dark Horse Games.

This division will be led by Johnny B. Lee, who previously worked at Improbable (Scavengers). "Our mission is to bring joy and entertainment through Dark Horse Comics’ portfolio of over 425 story driven, diverse and unique worlds and characters" said Dark Horse Games on its website.

Hellboy IP: Dark Horse owns some very popular IP, which could convert well to video game properties, including Hellboy, Sin City, 300, Emily Strange, Umbrella Academy, and many more. The games will be released on multiple platforms, including "PC, consoles, mobile, and Cloud."

First-party Properties: Dark Horse Games plans on creating its own first-party games while working with external game developers through licensing partnerships. "DHG is in active discussions with the world’s top gaming companies to develop games with our IPs to be released over the next several years," said Lee.

Who would you match up with some of these IPs? We'd like to see Creative Assembly return for some Spartan: Total Warrior magic with the 300 brand.

Ancient blade of slam-dunking

There is an exceptionally well-hidden sword called Eltonbrand in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind that can only be found by completing a series of very particular steps.

Morrowind released in 2002 for PC and Xbox

You need to own the sword Goldbrand (but you can't have stolen it), then you need to complete the vampire quest Shashev's Key while having exactly 11171 pieces of gold in your inventory. Do this, and a unique dialogue option appears that replaces Goldbrand with Eltonbrand. Oh, yes, this is all a big tribute to the NBA star Elton Brand.

There’s big money in Pokémon

All-new Pokemon games are on the horizon

The Pokémon Company just reported its best financial year ever as the pocket monsters celebrate their 25th anniversary.

Revenue for the financial year 2020/2021 reached $1.1 billion, with an operating profit of $254 million and net profit of $170 million. All things Pokémon proved wildly popular during the pandemic.

What's that in your pocket: The Pokémon trading card game has surged in popularity, but Pokémon Go is the greatest success with record player spending, as you can see from this chart showing operating revenue since it launched in 2016/17.

More to come: Two Pokémon Sword & Shield expansions were released in the last financial year, and there will be plenty of Pokémon in the coming year as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl launch in November and Pokémon Legends: Arceus follows in January next year.

Half of Cyberpunk 2077 team still at work

CD Projekt has been the target of class action lawsuits

CD Projekt president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński has confirmed that the studio is still dedicated to improving Cyberpunk 2077 after a troubled launch that forced the developers to delay DLC in favour of fixing the rather broken game.

"While we already see major improvements, a large part of the team continues to work on making sure that Cyberpunk provides even better entertainment to gamers,” Kiciński said in the latest audio webcast and earnings call.

Half-full: “Nearly half” of the original development team remains hard at work on Cyberpunk 2077, while parts of the team have split off to start pre-production on CD Projekt's upcoming games. There's no word on when it will return to the PlayStation Store, either.

Parallel IP: CD Projekt is planning to develop more games in parallel in the future in order to maintain a steady stream of products, and the studio will reorganize their development practices over the next year.

RTX 3080Ti and 3070Ti GPUs out in June

Nvidia continues to battle supply issues for GPUs

Sure, you can't actually buy GeForce 3000 series GPUs, but that doesn't stop Nvidia from announcing a new line of them – namely the RTX 3070Ti and RTX 3080Ti, which will launch at $599 and $1199 respectively.

Nvidia unveiled the new models at Computex 2021, and the cards run the latest Ampere architecture revision and will deliver an “incredible leap in performance and fidelity”.

Rip and tear: id Software is updating Doom Eternal to support ray-tracing, and Nvidia used the game to showcase the 3080Ti by running it at 4K with ray-tracing. The 3080Ti features 12GBs of GDDR6X, 4GBs more than the 3070 and half of what the 3090 offers.

Out this week: The 3070Ti does not target 4K and is considerably cheaper, while still delivering exceptional performance for 1080p and 1440p. The 3080Ti launches on June 3rd, while the 3070Ti follows on June 10th.

What beer was advertised in the original version of Tapper?

Sadly, there is no “WASSUUUUP” button

ANSWER: Roger L. Jackson!

If you were a kid in the 80s, you might remember Root Beer Tapper, but did you know that Tapper was a product of Anheuser-Busch? The original Tapper was made with bars in mind, and the game featured Budweiser beer tap handles and drink holders as well as a big Budweiser logo in the middle.

However, the very next year the beer logos were removed and the game became Root Beer Tapper. There could be a number of reasons for this: The Budweiser license could have expired, or Anheuser-Busch simply realized that a big interactive beer commercial in arcades for kids was just not a great look
