The Simpsons: Hit & Run in Unreal Engine
Game development YouTuber reubs has posted a video showing how he remastered The Simpsons Hit and Run in Unreal Engine 5.
The project is based on the original game's map and textures, and while some parts of the map had to be rebuilt most of it is simply touched up. The old low-resolution textures are upscaled using tools powered by machine learning, sharpening them while preserving the original look.
Springfield 2.0 Homer is up and running, as is basic vehicle AI, collectibles, destruction, and some missions. It's a long way from being done, but it's an impressive effort for less than two weeks of work and demonstrates how powerful game development tools have become.
Praise from the top: Joe McGinn, the lead designer on the original game, even turned up in the comments to congratulate reubs on his work: “Amazing what you accomplished! Really gives a taste of what a full modern remaster could be. Impressive work!”
