Game development YouTuber reubs has posted a video showing how he remastered The Simpsons Hit and Run in Unreal Engine 5.

The project is based on the original game's map and textures, and while some parts of the map had to be rebuilt most of it is simply touched up. The old low-resolution textures are upscaled using tools powered by machine learning, sharpening them while preserving the original look.

Springfield 2.0 Homer is up and running, as is basic vehicle AI, collectibles, destruction, and some missions. It's a long way from being done, but it's an impressive effort for less than two weeks of work and demonstrates how powerful game development tools have become.

Praise from the top: Joe McGinn, the lead designer on the original game, even turned up in the comments to congratulate reubs on his work: “Amazing what you accomplished! Really gives a taste of what a full modern remaster could be. Impressive work!”

A post-apocalyptic Western from Poland

GIF loop of Exekiller’s hover car racing throught the wasteland

Polish developer Paradark Studios has just announced Exekiller, an open-world first-person shooter set in a retrofuturistic post-apocalyptic universe with a Wild West twist. You can wishlist it on Steam, but there's no release date yet.

“We are fans of Westerns and post-apocalyptic, but also dark science-fiction, cyberpunk, and retro-futurism—from mixing these genres, Exekiller was born,” said Paradark CEO Amadeusz Wrobel.

Frontier action: Exekiller is an action-adventure where you explore a vast open-world ravaged by the Great Fire Disaster, which wiped out two-thirds of humanity and reduced the planet to a wasteland.

Soul harvest: Step into the boots of an exekiller bounty hunter and bring outlaws to justice and collect biochips called S.O.U.L.S that form the cornerstone of what little is left of civilization.

What was the subtitle of the second Reservoir Dogs game?

Mr. Blue, Mr. Blonde, and Mr. Pink recreating the film's iconic trunk shot

ANSWER: Bloody Days!

Reservoir Dogs was adapted into a very mediocre videogame in 2006, and managed to stir some controversy with its violence – as well as get banned in Germany and Australia. Not a particularly memorable achievement, but there’s a strange twist: Big Star Games made a sequel in 2017. The first game was a third-person shooter about taking hostages to use as human shields, while the sequel – subtitled Bloody Days – was a twin-stick shooter with a time-rewinding mechanic.

Neither of those adaptations do anything to capture the chamber play sensibility of the movie, and the cast is completely unrecognizable as well. It’s the very definition of a cynical cash-in, and it’s hardly a surprise that you can no longer buy them on any digital storefronts.
