Frostbite makes its debut on Switch
EA remains hell-bent on making DICE’s Frostbite engine the standard technology platform across all its studios, and now the very first Frostbite-powered game is coming to Switch.
PopCap did the necessary work to get Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighbourville running on Switch, and that might be the first step towards many other games finally making the leap to Nintendo's increasingly popular console.
Frostbitten: “…we spent the last year and a half bringing it over to the Switch and making sure that Frostbite worked on the platform because we are the first-ever Frostbite title to be launched on the Nintendo Switch,” producer Melvin Teo told How Games Make Money podcast.
Path cleared: Adapting Frostbite for Switch was a “massive technical undertaking” since the game only ran at 2 or 3 frames per second when the work started. “It was a slideshow, and we had a lot of work to do,” according to Teo. They worked with QLOC SA, who also helped bring Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen to Switch.
