Developers surprised by Vita store closure

Sony recently announced that the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita will close — to the surprise of several developers.

Vita launched in late 2011 and discontinued March 2019

The Vita store will close on August 27th, meaning no new digital purchases can be made although any games you own can still be downloaded. The news has led to the cancellation of several games in development for the handheld.

Uneconomical: Games can still be released in physical editions but considering the expense of pressing, packaging, and distributing physical media, it would be hard for many if not most developers to recoup costs. The only way to resume digital distribution for Vita is to include cross-buy with PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 games.

Final countdown: One studio was more than half done with their latest Vita dungeon crawler, and is working “really hard to finish them and go through certification” before the deadline. Tikipod will also launch their biggest Vita game yet this month.

DIY bounty hunter chase in space

You can make a decent stab at recreating the asteroid belt chase scene from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones in Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike for GameCube.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike was made by Factor 5

Unlock Slave I and Jedi Starfighter, then open the multiplayer mode Dogfight. Let two players pick these ships, and the Slave I color scheme switches from Boba Fett’s to Jango Fett’s.

New Witcher and Cyberpunk games

CD Projekt RED has more or less confirmed that both a new Witcher and a new Cyberpunk game are on the way.

Cyberpunk 2077 was set to have standalone multiplayer

The company's latest business strategy report revealed their plan for “parallel AAA development”, which will start in 2022. CD Projekt just acquired Canadian studio Digital Scapes, which will become CD Projekt RED Vancouver to bulk up their development capacity.

Dual wielding: The new strategy enables CD Projekt to focus on “two core franchises” and an integrated technology strategy. They are also planning to announce games much later, and avoid showing them before they are fairly close to launch.

Multiplayer mayhem: According to the report, the stand-alone multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077 has been scrapped, with no clear indication of whether that means multiplayer modes will be added to the existing game or if they are cancelled altogether.

Who voiced General Carrington in the XII game?

ANSWER: Adam West!

Holy cel-shading, Batman!

XIII was not exactly a big hit at launch, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. Aside from its striking visuals, it featured a star-studded cast with David Duchovny voicing the main character, while the villain General Carrington was voiced by beloved character actor Adam West, most famous for portraying Batman in the 60s television show. Other notable appearances include Eve, David Gasman, and Joe Sheridan.

The game ends on a cliffhanger, but there is essentially no hope of a sequel thanks to the poor performance of the original and the critical evisceration suffered by the recent remake. Oh well, at least you can read the comics to find out what happens next.
